Shrink Sleeve Labels

When it comes to branding, nothing makes a bigger splash than a product wrapped in a shrink sleeve. This full-body printed label offers 360-degree coverage of bottles, cans, and other containers, providing a canvas for marketers to showcase bright, colorful graphics designed to grab the eye of the consumer. But shrink sleeve labels can do so much more.
The Shrink Sleeve Process
Shrink sleeve labels are printed on a flexible plastic or polyester film, with the ink being applied to the inside of the film instead of on top. The printed sheets are then sealed together with glue on both ends while the tops and bottoms are left open to create cylindrical-shaped sleeves.
Next, the sleeves are placed over the container and heat or steam is applied; this shrinks the label so it conforms to the shape of the vessel. Unlike traditional pressure-sensitive labels, which are applied manually, the shrink sleeve molds perfectly to bottles and cans of virtually any size or shape.

Benefits of Shrink Sleeve Labels
Because the shrink sleeve is a full-body covering, it offers 150% more space than pressure-sensitive labels. And the reverse-printing process protects labels from smudging, fading, and other damage. All that extra room provides space for product information such as ingredients, usage directions, regulatory notices, and more. It’s a great way to take advantage of 360-degree branding.
Another positive of shrink sleeve packaging is its ability to adhere closely to products that vary in size and shape. This lets manufacturers group different products together into a single packaging unit, creating a promotional shrink sleeve for free samples, two-for-one specials, and other unique marketing opportunities.
In addition to ample space for branding, the ability to group oddly shaped products together, and the security provided by tamper-evident sealing, shrink sleeve labels are made from durable materials that can withstand harsh environments. This makes them an ideal packaging solution for products that are stored in humid or moist surroundings, like beverages and shampoo.
With all these benefits, many consider shrink sleeve labels to be an ideal all-in-one solution for promoting, protecting, and informing.
History of Shrink Sleeve Labels
Shrink sleeve labels have been around for decades. They first gained prominence following the Tylenol capsule tampering in 1982, a tragedy that led manufacturers to seek out safer packaging for consumer goods. Completely enclosing a container with a seamless label that perfectly conforms to even irregularly shaped and oddly sized products proved to be an effective solution.
Today, shrink sleeve labels are widely used in the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, food and beverage, cosmetic, chemical, and household goods industries. But what are they exactly and how do they work?
